“I’m a 38-year-old native Texan from a very small town about 3 hours West of Dallas called Woodson. Although my mother is a wonderful painter, and I have loved art since I was a tiny kid, I didn’t pick up a paintbrush seriously until my early 30s. I took off to Los Angeles after high school and lived there almost 15 years where I enjoyed a lively career in the costume and special FX makeup industry. When I lost the only affordable rent house left in the city and my father fell seriously ill, I moved back to my hometown in 2018, began bartending, taught myself to paint, fell in love, had my daughter Bonnie, and now have just as enjoyable and lively a time in almost the exact opposite lifestyle I was accustomed to. My work in LA took me to some very exotic locations, most notably India, where I absorbed many wonderful colors, tastes and traditions. Those travels, combined with my upbringing in wild, rural Texas continues to influence my work in ever-evolving ways.
This series of abstract horses is a departure from my usual mode of painting vivid, stylistic wildlife, but they have grown over the last few years to hold a special place in my catalogue of favorite work. I grew up around horses like so many Texas kids, but I liked observing, talking to and drawing them more than I really wanted to ride. I still have horse doodles from my toddler years and though my technique has improved a bit, my appreciation for this animal’s form and spirit remains evident. To create these I use my fingers to sculpt/texture lightly with joint compound on canvas and then paint with acrylic. They have been on display over the last two years at shows such as Fort Worth Main Street, Woodlands Waterway, Southlake, Bayou City and Smoky Hill River Arts Festivals, and now at Cerulean Gallery in Dallas, TX. I hope they bring spirit and beauty to your home as I intended them to.”
